Layering allows every purchase now to become a durable investment for later. Critical for chilly and mid-season styling, layering is somewhere between an art and a science. It takes real skill and confidence to pull off. We’re here to share some of our faithful tips and tricks on how to elevate your warmth but, more importantly, do it with style power.

Proportions are crucial when trying to bundle up without looking bulky. Start small with a base layer like a tank, tee or a dainty dress if you please. We also favour a light long sleeve or jumper for extra warmth. Choose carefully when reaching for a jumper. You don’t want to feel constricted. The trick to feeling easy in a layered look is to pick clothes that accommodate not constrict. Personally, this writer’s favourite base is a polo neck whether it be a tank or sleeved top. The peaking neckline of a polo neck underneath your outerwear always brings an err of sophistication.

Streamline your bottom half for a balanced silhouette. This is crucial as your bottom half will help restrain where a chic look could become derelict. Try a skinny or bootcut jean if you’re a newcomer to layering. If you want to be adventurous try out a flared trouser. For shorter girls, don’t go wider than a culotte. Layering usually doesn’t apply to your bottom half unless you’ve opted for a skirt or dress, in that case then slap on some tights and boots.

The combinations of light fabrics will allow you to work your way out during the day. If the mid-season weather throws you in for a loop, you can easily adjust by removing or adding items.
